His business computer have just suffered another virus attack despite having an antivirus software on the system. His question set me thinking. I thought for a while about the various antivirus software that I have used in time past. The list is quite long. Currently, I am pitching my tent with AVAST. Sometime ago, I was a fan of AVG. Here is a small list of some antivirus softwares that I have used over the year.

Why change from one antivirus software to another?

Changing from one antivirus to another is not cheap for a small scale entrepreneur. The only reason why I change from one antivirus to another is when there is a virus threat and the current antivirus software is unable to deal with the threat. I’ve had quite some unplesant cases of data being wiped out or corrupted because of virus infection. Also, I’ve had my own share of headache due to system being slowed down to an unbearable speed due to spyware and malware infection.

So which is the best antivirus or anti-spyware software?

It is difficult to tell. I’ve discovered that what works for Mr. A may not work for Mr. B due to the fact that different users attract different virus and spyware by their activities online. A computer user that uses his or her pc for browsing and downloading software from different website will face a different threat of virus and spyware that will be different from one that only uses the computer for sending and receiving emails.

My Suggestion for combating virus and spyware

I’ve observed that most of the recent virus infection I got were after using my pc for browsing and downloading files from websites. So, I have devised a little system to protect myself. While my pc have an antivirus that I update constantly as minimum protection, I have also learn to use Ubuntu for my browsing adventure. I have Ubuntu encapsuled in Sun VirtualBox on my system.

Since most of the virus and malware are targetted at Microsoft Windows users, browsing with Ubuntu in a virtual operating system has reduced greatly the incidence of virus infection. You can try it out. Getting Ubuntu and VirtualBox is free. Just install Ubuntu as a guest operating system then you can use it to do your browsing and downloading.
